Mark L.'s Story

After leaving Monroe High School, I entered UCLA' s Engineering School. Prior to my graduation in 1983 I had started work for Kaiser Permanente as a management consultant which I really enjoyed. I left Southern California (and the U.S.) in 1986 to go to work for the Army in Germany. As a civilian engineer there, I helped manage military base facilities. It was a great opportunity to really explore and experience Europe and I had a lot of fun. After 6 years, I got tired of the weather and homesickness and I had the Army transfer me to Ft. Huachuca in SE Arizona. Eventually I became the Facility Manager for the base hospital there, but I was never very comfortable with small town life. In 1998, I took a job in the Engineering Department at the VA Medical Center in Phoenix. In March 2006, I accepted the position of Chief Engineer at the VA Hospital in Amarillo, Texas. Unfortunately I developed a conflict with my boss and things got ugly. In 2008 I was forced to take legal action against my employer and relocated to Oklahoma City to work with my former Phoenix boss at the OKC VA hospital. After successfully managing many major construction projects at that hospital, I accepted a promotion as Chief of all construction activities in 2015. After 31 years of government service., I retired in June 2017 and my wife and I relocated back ...Expand for more
to the Phoenix area to be closer to family, In 2020, I started working part time with test vehicles at a local automotive proving grounds. In 2000, I met my wife Kelly and we were married in Jamaica in 2002. These days, we enjoy a quiet life either in the pool during the summer or getting outdoors and checking out things to do here in the Phoenix Metro area. Shortly after returning to Germany, I got back into my favorite hobby from high school and college: tinkering with classic muscle cars. I did a frame-on restoration of a 1980 Trans Am that sort of fell into my lap. I replaced the T/A with an original 1967 Firebird I found in So Cal and spent 20 years on a complete rebuild. Unfortunately, as I sent it out for painting to get it completed - I got ripped off by the painter. The car was completely trashed from being stored outside and I was a bit too old to start all over again. So, I went back to my car "roots" and have a couple of cool late model Mustangs to tinker with. For my Monroe classmates who would like to reminisce, I have uploaded scans of the audience program for our 1978 graduation, a spectator ticket, and a photo of my cap tassels. My brother came across a manila envelope with these souvenirs when cleaning out my parent’s house. I also have a copy of the student program, but at 54 pages it’s a bit to scan in.
